Part 2: Exercise - Too much or not enough

In this exercise I have to create poster for a coming event. It could be anything, like local gig, concert, exhibition, jumble sale and I decided to make it for a music festival “Belgrade Calling” which will be held this summer for the first time.

I started with mind maps and I made some thumbnails based on them.

The variety of great world bands are what makes this festival so attractive so I can’t find the way to leave them out from the poster. I used bands logotypes in black color because black is associated with rock’ n’ roll. Based on mind mapping for words “Belgrade Calling” I chose to present close up look of the ear with the guitar volume as an earing. I took a picture of the ear which I edited in Photoshop and then I created volume earing. Next I added a bands logotypes which are scattered on a both side. I have chosen for this poster to be in black & white.

First version of  design which refer to “too much” has a title,  bands logotypes, information about when and where it will be held, and additional information about tickets sale. I placed band logotypes around the ear, on a both side of the head so it can even give impressions of  tattoos. I made a slight crackle effect on a surface because “things can crackle” under the sound depending how much you volume it. Information about date and place are framed in black so it could be more eye-catching but at the same time, the all together contributes to clutter.

In a second version of the design I used font for bands names instead of their logotypes. I placed them in the bottom of the poster and separated each band name with slash, so it gives more clean and simplified look to design. I left out information about tickets and put only short announcement about date and place. The reason why I decided to put away ticket information is the fact that this is a very big and popular festival which will be advertised a lot and therefore tickets will be available at all places for its sale. So this is a poster with minimum information.

Third poster was variation of the first one with ear and volume knob as an earing. I kept band logotypes but I left out some information about tickets sale. I used just a white century gothic font on a black  background.

Conclusion

When I asked for critique, people suggested me to leave out ticket sale information from the first poster and to simplify information about date and place, which I later did.  In their opinion it could be good balance between clutter and not enough information, but at the end when I thought about it, I think I accomplished the goal with a simplified poster. It includes all crucial information about festival but it has a cleaner look. I might be biased but I always prefer clean and simple look.

I decided to play even further so I created a second design for poster in which I included band logotypes but I was trying to maintain a simplicity. I created a big megaphone using Photoshop, from which coming out a bands logotypes. This metaphorically presents a noisy announcement about musical guests and open calling for festival. I only added a title with short information about date and place in right bottom section. I put them purposely on a green bottom background which associates on grass because this event will take place on a city park. For the same reason I used light blue and violet gradient as association to the sky and open space.

I think it could work well too, although its design is much different then the first one. It has clean and modern look which suits the fact that this is new festival. It also shows all the bands which will participate, and it has background that associate on open space like park where it will be held. Maybe the first poster with ear and volume knob has more of that classic rock’ n ‘roll style, but the second version with megaphone provides as much information as the first one do. This is how I personally jugged my final result when I disregarded other opinions.
