Part 5: Research point - Posters - part 3

This is a poster for a local gig in Houston Texas. Authentic illustration with a perfect use of color and pattern is what caught my eye instantly.

I like this rock’n’ roll style for American heavy metal band Mastodon. Illustration is very rich despite the limited color palette. I like textures and prints and I think it is very effective along with this combination of bold and narrow typefaces. I think I found a valuable example as an inspiration for my next exercise.

This is a poster for Wilco, alternative rock band I am familiar with. I love this photo; it has that nostalgic and melancholic sense. Title is clean and simple but very notable, positioned on a light sky.

Another poster for Wilco that I found very interesting. I like the effect of hiding letters in this book shelf. I also like the way how limited palette works in this case.

This illustration based poster works great both as an concept and design. I like black and white illustration and yellow dotted numbers 1,2,3,4. Date and place are stamped in lower left corner.

This poster reminds me on surreal paintings. I love the vivid colors and textures that make it more rich and a little grunge, achieving the depth and consistency.

This poster is an example of simplicity but it so strong in conveying message that it chills me to the bone.

I like this poster for his retro style and a good use of colors. Complementary colors such as orange and blue can clush if they are not used carefully. What I like here is good contrast and visual dynamic when it comes to both graphics and typography.

This interesting retro style poster is for the Music Conference in Melbourne. I like the idea of combination of typewritter and keyboard which produces a announcement for the event. I also like typograhy and its masking effects along with slightly textured paper. These small details give richness to simple design. I like the shades of violet with white and brown as they create a beautiful contrast.

This poster design shows all richness using only black and white and its shades. I like the use of light, starry sky, and this fantastic typography that goes so naturally with the rest of the composition.

This is my favorite poster design which I would love to have on the wall.  It symbolically represents  passion and fire in rock'n' roll jamming  in a very expressive way. Big woman's leg in high heel shoe trampling the wire. I love the details like grunge background which  goes very well with  this concept. All richness and visual dymanic is accomplished using limitted color palette that works great.

Part 5: Research - Posters -part 2

I have already mentioned that I love work of Milton Glasser who is one of the most influential designers. I love the way he thinks about things in life, and how he can convey message in such intelligent way. This poster is not exception and I like how he naturally created bond between music and drawing.

Those posters above are of the same series. I like it for their contrasts, simplicity and intelligent word play which is typical for Milton Glasser.

Another Glasser's word play that showing art as hat which symbolically means that art is protection. I like the whole concept with shadow effect and contrast created by light violet and dark shades.

Another great designer Paul Davis created poster for SVA portraying imagination in well recognizable way, by creating this collage-made artwork. He gathered and combined different pieces to create this face with hands with a clear message that this is a product of creativity and imagination.

Davis also created this interesting poster where he made a palette of some of  the most influental figures in art.

Like Glasser's posters above, this Davis's artwork is based on a word play and unique design.

Stephen Kroninger is regarded as a pioneer of collage renaissance which is understandable if we look at his work. The illustrations of this award winning multitalented artist apperaed in almost all major publications across the America. This is a poster in a form of a collage for School of Visual Arts (SVA). It reminds me of Dadaism and Hannah Hoch. It looks like a very well organized chaos with numerous elements that are harmonically connected.

Through this poster Kroninger expressed his feelings and political opinions. I like the artwork whose purpose is to raise awareness and not only to look interesting. Using cuttings as typographical elements with hierarchy he created visual dynamic that draws attention.

This poster is created by Stefan Sagmeister, one of my favorite designer. This is his recognizable style, I knew it was his poster from the moment I saw it. I like those letters which look like they are made of  real branches and I like what is written.

This poster made by James McMullan portrays the working man and tower of cards which implicates that art is never just a pure tallent; there are hard work and skills behnd that. I think this is important message that many people are not aware of.

Part 5: Research - Posters - part 1

Generally poster is a printed paper which is designed to be attached to the wall. Its main purpose is to visually convey a message so it has to be eye-catching and informative. It may be designed wholly graphical, textual and as a combination of those elements.

Throughout his long history it documented everything: from advertising, propaganda, and protest to the reproduction of famous artworks. Having on mind all that wideness of use, it was hard to select the most inspiring because there are a lot of them either modern or vintage ones. I came across to many internet galleries which have great examples, and I also have a quite good collection in my books. I have already presented some of my favorite posters for Assignment 3, but there are a lot more.

I will go back to 1960’ and 1970’ to present Wes Wilson, one of the most influential poster designer who was especially famous for his work on rock’n’roll posters.

Wes Wilson is American artist, famous for his work for Bill Graham of the The Fillmore in San Francisco. His style based on moving and melting letters is described as a psychedelic and it is regarded as a synonym of psychedelic era in 1960’.

What I particularly like about his work is readability and hierarchy which wasn’t easy to accomplish when we look at those custom-made, non standard “awkward” letters. I easily got all the information from the posters after I was attracted to its unique designs.

I like this combination of pink and soft green. Those two opposite colors can clash easily but with right use of color values it can create dynamic and harmony. All the important information is in right size and very notable.

Unlike its common wholly typographic posters, this one has a combination of photo and text. Two complementary colours in proper values create simplicity which is a good background for all typefaces used here.

This limited color palette poster accomplished its dynamic and appeal throughout its subordinate dark violet background and a vivid pink. I like the combination of typefaces, its hierarchy and graphic simplicity with a clear message.

Another great design that uses two contrasting colours: dark blue and yellow. This is a typographic illustration in a form of a head with brain inside that is visually suitable to "Mindbenders". Again good hierarchy provides notability for crucial information.

This is a poster for performance of American rock band called Sons of Champlin. The most striking detail here is a word THEM in 3D effect. It looks amazing,  like a fiery ball. Subtle grey-violet and petrol blue provide a good contrast to vibrant red letters.

Another great poster that has his personal mark. Letters of different sizes are distorted  and they look like a one big mass that overflows from one spot to another. The illustration of a woman's body is placed inside. All elements are distinctive because of its contrast and uniqueness. Good hierarchy again helped to determine priority when it comes to information.

Another poster that is typical Wilson work. I like the combination of analog colors such as red and orange which combined with beige provide harmony and contrast.

I found this poster as a real work of art. I love everything about it; colors are so well combined, while typographic illustration would be effective if was only black on white. It is amazing how he successfully and free played with typography and still preserved crucial things in design; giving the right information following priorities.

When I look at this poster I have a feeling that I am looking at some odd interesting curtains and for some reason it reminds me on thetar. His work could be regarded as optical illusions, because I really have a feeling that letters are flowing, melting, and rippling. Good color choice makes it modern and interesting.

Here is design that uses a few subtle colors with enough contrast to make all the information notable. It looks like an illustration of a concert venue that hosted bands listed in circle, or it could be a microphone, or a tree. I am not sure about it but I like it. All crucial information grab attention immediately.

Part 5: Tables and forms - Inspiring examples

I came across to many versions of periodic table while I was researching tables and forms but this one looks interesting as an idea. The use of tables is widespread and we often regard them in more conventional way so this typographic periodic table is authentic.

This is an interesting vivid design with a some form of table. I like the fact that tabs are displayed as a book spines lined up next to each other. Colorful tabs create good visual dynamic along with whitespace and devices.

This is a more conventional use of tables for a web design purpose but it is neat, clean with a good hierarchy providing all important information. I like the way how black and grey are interspersed with vivid and subtle shades of colors creating a good contrast.

This is an interesting infographic that uses among others tabular presentation of information. I like the harmonious contrast that creates dark blue and pink with all their values.

This is a tabular  presentation  in a form of book content. I like contrast between modern serif and narrow sans serif. Crucial information are very distinctive and all look neat.

This is a very interesting design based on tabular presentation. Obvious typographic hierarchy emphasizes the importance of information while vibrant colors provide a visual dynamic.

I like this non conventional tabular design. Unlike neat and tidy rows and columns, this one has uneven rows, resembling to paper cuttings. I also like the visual contrast and authentic hand crafted typography in soft pink irregular shape. It looks like a hand made collage.

This is also a very interesting and authentic design. I love the idea, colors, and text around bold numbers. It all creates one harmonious unity.

This infographic is interesting in its graphic presentation. It looks like cards lined up in three rows. Different elements contribute to the richness in this limited color palette design.
